Orthodontics

We can straighten your teeth at any age. Whether for improved function or cosmetic reasons, orthodontics are available for any of our patients. Ask us which orthodontic treatments we recommend for you.

Why Dental Patients Get Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatments straighten your teeth, enhancing their appearance and function. They work by applying specific pressure to your teeth, moving them into the correct position over time. Orthodontics address several dental issues:

  • Misaligned/crooked teeth
  • Overbite (top teeth hang over the bottom)
  • Underbite (bottom teeth come in front of the top)
  • Crowded teeth
  • Relief of muscle tension or pain
  • Balancing teeth wear

Traditionally thought of as an appliance for children and young adults, more adults are opting for this treatment. With more options, including discreet straightening, adults are more inclined than ever to correct their teeth.

How Long Does Orthodontic Treatment Last?

Everyone has different oral health needs. Factors such as age, how much your teeth need to move/rotate and which orthodontic system we use, impacts the treatment. Straightening your teeth can take months or even years. It also takes longer to treat adults than children or teenagers as their teeth have had more time to arrange themselves into the current state.

When you come see us for an orthodontics consultation, we can estimate the length of time required for your treatment. Once we move forward with orthodontics, you will need to come to the practice at regular intervals, so we can track your progress and make any adjustments.

Fixed Braces

Fixed appliances are the most commonly used braces today, because they allow accurate positioning of the teeth. This style of braces are bonded to the teeth, and therefore not removable (which means you can’t forget to wear them!). Fixed braces have been around for decades because they have proven results.

There are various systems available ranging from the standard metal brackets to clear or aesthetic brackets. Clear brackets dramatically reduce the visibility of fixed braces, making them particularly popular for adults.

We use the latest low-friction fixed braces systems such as Damon and In-Ovation R, which reduce treatment time.

Removable Braces

Simple orthodontic treatment may be carried out with a removable brace appliance. The appliance is a plate that can be taken out and snapped back in place. Removable braces have delicate wires and springs attached, which move the teeth using gentle pressure, just like fixed braces. Throughout your treatment, we adjust the wires to push your teeth into the correct position.

Removable braces are well suited for minor orthodontic treatments, usually with the upper teeth. They can be removed for eating, brushing and flossing, making it easier to keep up with your oral hygiene. Speaking of cleaning, the ability to take them out ensures that you can clean removable braces thoroughly. As long as you remember to put these braces back in and wear them most of the day, this could be the right option for you.

Invisalign

If you are looking for a treatment option that will straighten your teeth gradually and discreetly, Invisalign might be the option for you. Invisalign can help treat a variety of orthodontic concerns, including teeth which are crooked, crowded or have gaps.

Invisalign straightens teeth using a series of virtually invisible, clear plastic aligners. Unlike fixed braces, they are removable. Invisalign trays are custom-made to sit over your top and bottom teeth, gently moving them into position. As you replace each aligner, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to the final position.

Because the aligners are virtually invisible, you do not have to worry about how they look on your teeth. The aligners should only be removed when eating, brushing or flossing your teeth. For the best results they should be worn about 22 hours out of the day. They can also be removed for important occasions, such as family weddings or big client meetings. However, we ask you to keep these occasions to a minimum. The more you take your aligners out, the longer your treatment will take, and the less effective it could become.

Invisalign Works in Two Simple Steps

  1. We take impressions of your teeth, photos, and X-rays and send them away to Europe.
  2. Approximately three weeks after your initial appointment, you come back to our practice for a clinical check. During this visit you can view your virtual 3D treatment plan. The digital plan illustrates the series of movements your teeth go through over the course of the treatment. This allows you to see what your teeth are expected to look like at the end of treatment. Your custom-made clear aligners are made from this treatment plan.
  3. Should you accept your clinical check, and you are happy to proceed with Invisalign treatment, you need to pay a deposit to manufacture the aligners. The remainder of the fee is paid over 18 to 24 months by interest-free monthly instalments.

Caring for Your Teeth When Orthodontic Treatment Ends

Once you begin orthodontic treatment, caring for your teeth once the orthodontic appliances are removed is vital. We recommend that patients wear a retainer as your teeth will be apt to move back to their original position. A retainer keeps them in their current position as long as the appliance is worn as directed (only through the night for many of our patients).

Your teeth may be sore following removal of braces, so we recommend avoiding sticky, chewy or hard foods until your mouth feels better.

As always, continue to stay on top of your dental check-ups, so we can monitor your teeth and ensure they are not moving out of the correct position.
