Veneers
For front teeth that are stained, chipped, or misaligned, dental veneers offer a natural-looking solution with minimum adjustment to your actual teeth.
What are Dental Veneers?
Two Types of Dental Veneers
Some dental practices offer two different types of veneers, usually made from composite resin or porcelain.
1. Composite Resin Veneers
Composite veneers are sometimes called instant veneers as you are able to get them done in one visit. Composite resin is the same restorative material used for composite fillings. These veneers are more affordable than porcelain veneers.
During this treatment, the dentist puts a mild abrasive on the surface of your tooth, giving it a rough texture. This gives the composite resin a stickier surface, helping it bond better to your tooth. The dentist colour-matches the composite resin to your natural teeth and applies the material in layers. After each layer is applied, a UV light hardens the composite resin before the next layer is added. When the final layer is complete, the dentist shapes and polishes your tooth for a natural and smooth finish.
2. Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers typically take two visits, but in our opinion, it’s worth it. Porcelain is stronger than composite and doesn’t change colour or stain the way composite resin can. These veneers typically last longer, too.
For your first visit with this treatment, we remove a thin layer of your natural tooth enamel to make room for the veneers. During this visit we also match the shade of your teeth with the porcelain we will use for your permanent veneers. We’ll take impressions of your teeth to make moulds that help us build your custom porcelain veneers. We’ll place temporary veneers until your permanent veneers are ready.
On your second visit, we remove the temporary veneers and roughen the surface of your teeth with a mild abrasive. Just like with composite veneers, the rougher tooth surface gives the porcelain veneer a better surface in which to adhere. One-by-one, the porcelain veneers are placed against your teeth using a composite resin cement. At the end of this visit, you should have a complete and beautiful smile.
Porcelain Veneers at Hutton Village Dental Practice
At our dental practice, we use porcelain dental veneers for our patients. While both types of veneers can be colour-matched to your teeth, porcelain veneers offer higher quality. In our opinion, porcelain veneers are the superior choice for a few reasons.

The Difference Between a Dental Veneer and a Crown
They may sound similar, but veneers and crowns restore teeth in very different ways. Both are typically made using porcelain which can be layered and shaded to achieve an excellent natural appearance.
The simplest way to explain the difference is how much of the tooth is covered. Veneers are a layer of porcelain bonded to the front surface of a tooth and are typically used in cosmetic dentistry for restoring chipped, worn or discoloured front teeth. Crowns cover all sides of a tooth to restore more significant wear and for when teeth require more strength and support.
You can discuss your cosmetic dentistry options with your dentist to decide which type of restorations are most appropriate for your smile and dental health. In comprehensive cosmetic cases, when treating multiple teeth, patients may require a combination of different types of restorations.
