    As we age, the underlying tissues that keep our skin looking youthful and plumped up begin to break down, often leaving laughter lines, smile lines, and creases over the areas where movement occurs.

    Dermal fillers are a range of smooth consistency gels made of hyaluronic acid (HA) - a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to add volume and hydration.

    These products mimic the hydrating and lifting effect of your skin’s natural hyaluronic acid (HA), which keeps the skin hydrated and elastic.

    Areas to treat:

    The most appropriate lines to treat with these range of products are those that are described as static - this means the deep facial lines you can see when your face is still. Static lines are due to lack of elasticity of the skin caused by sun damage, smoking, and unfortunately genetics.

    • Injectable fillers can help fill in these lines and creases, temporarily restoring a smoother, youthful-looking appearance. When injected beneath the skin, fillers ‘fill’ up creased and sunken areas of the face.
    • Dermal fillers can also be used to plump up certain features. They are often used to create plumper lips for a pretty pout.
    • You will see the benefit immediately. The results can last around 4-6 months and up to 9 months depending on the individual.
    • After the first treatment there is a real difference, with a softening of facial lines and wrinkles as well as an improvement in lines around the mouth. With repeated treatments over time, the effects last longer and deliver greater benefits.
    • Some swelling and reddening may appear which usually fades quite quickly. In some areas you might be aware of a lumpy or nodular feeling after the treatment with fillers. This is transient and will go away after a few days or weeks.

    Dermal Fillers are available in a choice of concentrations designed to be used in different areas of the face. Certain areas of the face might require more treatment (volume of product) than other areas.

    The product
    Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring polysaccharide (sugar). Hyaluronic Acid is found throughout the body; it acts as a lubricant, and helps to maintain hydration in the skin. ‘Non Animal Stabilised Hyaluronic Acid’ dermal fillers do not need a test patch; therefore treatment can proceed at the time of consultation, if required.

    Fillers come in a variety of viscosities (consistencies), and can be used for various filling requirements.

    The treatment

    Unlike Botox treatment, the results can be seen at the time of treatment (immediately), but 2 weeks should be allowed for the final results to be appreciated. The results should last approximately 6 months, but once again as we are all individuals, the product will sometimes be absorbed more quickly compared to the absorption rate of another person. It really depends on the amount used and how deep the lines are.

    Dermal fillers are used for volumising or filling out passive facial lines and folds.

    Things that can go wrong!

    • As the treatment involves injections there is always the potential for bruising, however refraining from drinking alcohol the previous day will help prevent this. If you are very prone to bruising then a course of arnica pre-treatment may help.
    • Redness and swelling can occur but usually goes down within three to four hours.
    • It is a possibility that significant swelling of the lips could occur immediately following the treatment. However this effect would normalize within 24 hours, if experienced at all.
    • Leslie Ash had a ‘permanent implant’, which she had a reaction to. The products being used in our clinic are natural ‘temporary fillers’, as indicated above.
